Korean Maedeup: The Traditional Art of Korean Knots
Maedeup (매듭) is the traditional Korean art of decorative knotting. Using carefully braided or twisted silk cords, artisans create intricate knots distinguished by their interwoven patterns, symmetry and remarkable precision.
Long used in clothing, accessories and everyday objects, Korean knots remain an iconic part of traditional Korean craftsmanship.
An Ancient Korean Tradition
Maedeup has a long history in Korea and flourished particularly during the Joseon period (1392–1910). Decorative knots were used with many different objects and accessories, including the norigae, a traditional pendant worn with the hanbok.
Worn as an ornament on clothing, a norigae typically combines cords, knots, decorative elements and tassels. Maedeup knots can also take inspiration from nature, with delicate shapes evoking flowers, butterflies, dragonflies and other forms.
Behind the apparent simplicity of a cord lies a highly precise craft. Each loop and crossing follows a specific sequence to create a balanced and harmonious pattern.
Knots with Graphic Forms
It is precisely this graphic quality that makes maedeup so fascinating.
The cords seem to weave in and out of themselves within a single motif, creating forms that are both geometric and organic. Symmetry, loops and interwoven lines give Korean knots their distinctive aesthetic.
Some designs directly evoke elements of nature, while others rely more on intricate arrangements of lines and volumes.
This richness of form provides a wonderful source of inspiration for contemporary design.
Jewelry Inspired by Korean Knots
Through this collection, I bring together the traditional art of Korean maedeup and contemporary French design.
Each piece draws on characteristic elements of Korean knots while transforming them into an original acrylic jewelry design.
Tradition becomes a starting point rather than a reproduction: an ancient motif, a new material and a different way of wearing it.
This collection is an invitation to discover the graphic beauty of Korean maedeup through a contemporary, handcrafted interpretation.
